FASHION INTERNSHIP Q&A.
Everyday I receive an email asking me questions about obtaining an internship in the industry. I have set this up to answer them for you, (check out ABOUT THE EDITOR to read my credentials
)
Q: Can you get me an internship?
A: I can’t! But…you can! Check out Free Fashion Internships, ED 2010 and Daily Fashion Jobs! Or, if you have a particular placement in mind, search for the contact information of someone of the company you would like to work for.
Q: Where have you interned? How did you get the jobs?
A: I have interned at Catherine Malandrino, Marie Claire, Vogue & Bottega Veneta, and was a temp sales assistant at Alexander Wang & 3.1 Phillip Lim. I simply responded to ads that I found, with the company’s looking for interns, forwarded over my resume & cover letter, and went on an interview.
Q: How difficult is it to get these internships?
A: It is only as difficult as you make it. I would say that I have sent out over 500 emails over the course of my internship applying processes. You NEVER know who you will score an interview with, so contact everyone and anyone you can find!
Q: Are internships hard?
A: That is dependent upon where you work. I have enjoyed some places more than others. I have learned more at some places than others. Each experience will teach you something you did not know about the industry and give you more exposure to the world of fashion.
Q: Do you think I can manage a fashion internship and a job?
A: That is really up to you. When I was in high school, I went to school 5 days/week, worked 2 days at Catherine Malandrino after school, worked 3 days a week at Apple, and 2 days at American Apparel. It is up to you & your level of determination.
Q: How can I get an internship abroad?
A: Great question! If you find out-shoot me an email, I want to go abroad soon!

Being as though we’re all on the hunt for internships, I’m sure that some of us don’t have prior experience in the field, however you have to start somewhere..right?:) Although I don’t have any previous jobs/internships in the field would it still be practical for me to apply in a pool where there are probably thousands of others more qualified? What are the makings of a good resume? How did you get your foot into this?
